Listening To Her
Friends

My best friend likes this boy and I think he likes her, too, but she always comes to me for advice. They talk on the phone almost every day, once until 2 in the morning. But he's leaving for Germany in 1 month and a half FOREVER. Please help me so that I don't have to listen to her cry for the rest of my life!

Canetika, age 13

Advice:

Just listen. Sure, she might be upset for a while, but she'll appreciate your support -- and she WILL eventually get over it.

Set boundaries. Spend a day just listening, but after that, only give her 5 or 10 minutes on the subject, acknowledge her feelings, then talk about or do something else.

Change the subject. If you don't want to talk about it, she'll find someone else who does, which will be time better spent for both of you.

Distract her. He's great, but there are other things in life that are great, too -- including other people. Encourage her to get over him now so you don't have to listen about it later.
