I Love You, Beth Cooper: Soundtrack
About the Soundtrack
The movie I Love You, Beth Cooper is based off the
book by the same name. In the book and movie, a nerdy boy named Denis
speaks in front of his entire school at his high school graduation. He
confesses that he has always been in love with Beth Cooper, the most
popular girl in school. Touched by his honesty, Beth Cooper decides to
give the boy a night he'll never forget.
The soundtrack is divided into four parts. Each set of songs is separated by an instrumental interlude (tracks 5, 9, and 12).
Part 1
There are four songs in the first part of the soundtrack. The
mood alternates between songs. If one song is sweet and sad, the next
is bold and powerful. It's like split personalities! We think the sweet
and sad ones represent Denis, and the bold and powerful ones represent
Beth Cooper.
Our favorite song in this set is Forget Me, performed by Violet
Columbus. If you liked the soundtrack to Juno, you'll love this
song. Violet's airy vocals have a little bit of an edge like Kimya
Dawson's, and it's all sung over an acoustic guitar. The song was
actually written by Eleni Mandell, who sings the same song on the very
last track (track 15).
Part 2
After the first interlude, the soundtrack is all energy! The
songs are all about living fast and hard. The songs have energy from
the simple beats and emphatic vocals. Our favorite song in this set was Catch
Me If You Can, which reminded us of Outkast, especially during
the chorus.
The interlude at the end of this set is eerie and troubled. It builds up to a very cathartic ending, though, as if something really amazing happened!
Part 3
The song following the interlude feels like a revelation. If you read
the name of the song, I bet you can guess what happened! At first,
the feeling of the song is far-away, like someone who is daydreaming
so hard their eyes glazed over. Then, that person wakes up and they
realize that everything is shiny, bright, and beautiful!
The next track, Cruisin', is chill, easy, and happy, like there's nothing wrong in the world. This is the shortest set on the soundtrack with only two songs.
Part 4
After the last interlude, the mood of the soundtrack feels like the reclamation
of life. There's a new energy now. It's not like the wild energy of
Part 2. This energy is controlled and mature. Sounds like someone has
grown up a little bit! But if you listen to the words, they're still
telling us that we're young and should be having fun.
The very last two songs are all excitement. It sounds like the bold and powerful personality from Part 1 won over!
This is the part with the second version of Forget Me. Eleni Mandell's version is electric-powered, drum-rhythmic, and features gritty, throaty vocals.
Overall
Our favorite tracks on this mix are #1, #3, and #11, followed closely by #6 and #4. Track #15 is great if you like the soundtrack to 10 Things I Hate About You.
Overall, we really like this soundtrack. A good soundtrack will tell the story of the movie in music. The I Love You, Beth Cooper soundtrack does just that! The interludes are a little distracting, but they do help tell the story. We give it a thumbs up!
