Quick Poll Results-Father's Day
|
| |
|
"It's always nice to know you have someone you can
call Dad." --Girl, age 19, Michigan
|
| |
| In honor of Father's Day, which falls on June 18 this year, SmartGirl
asked you to tell us all about your relationships with your fathers. Although
only 12% of you said that you are so close with their dads that you can
talk to him about anything, an additional 66% consider yourselves to be
close with your dads, even though there are some things you can't (and may
not want to) talk to him about. |
| |
| It's no secret that father/daughter relationships can sometimes be a
bit rocky. 20% of you said that you don't feel close your dads at all. When
it comes to arguments, 14% of girls said that you are constantly butting
heads with your dads. It's not all bad, though, because 34% said that you
hardly ever fight with your dads! Ultimately, these occasional arguments
haven't had a negative impact on your relationship. |
| |
| Even though dads might not always "get it," you girls truly appreciate
the effort that your dads make to listen to what's going on in your lives.
The survey also pointed to the fact that fathers don't have to work hard
or spend money to let you know they care. According to most of you, it's
the simple things that make the biggest impression. |
| |
| 61% of you felt that your dads were sometimes too strict, but when we
asked what you like most about your fathers, many girls mentioned how important
the protection of your dads really means to you. |
| |
| A 53% majority of you also believe that your fathers do understand where
you are coming from, despite the generation gap. Many girls mentioned that
the thing they loved most about their dads is that they are very hip and
in tune to teen trends like music and fashion, but even the fathers who
may be a little out of touch scored big points. For the most part, you love
and respect your fathers for who they are. |
| |
| Here's what some of you had to say about your dads: |
| |
| "My father and I have periods where we fight, and at that time he knows
we need a 'father and daughter day.' He takes me out on a fun trip and we
talk and laugh all day together." --Girl, 15, Kentucky |
| |
| "If anyone ever treated me wrong, my dad would teach him. I'm not afraid
of getting my heart broken by a guy because most of them are too afraid
of my dad to be mean to me!" Girl, 14, Conneticut |
| |
| "My father likes to sit and talk with me just to see how my day was, or
if I went somewhere special, he will ask how it was. I love him to death."
--Girl, 12 |
| |
| "My dad always lets me speak my mind, even if he doesn't agree with what
I'm saying." --Girl, 13, Wisconsin |
| |
| "My father is a really great man. I sometimes pick on him cuz he's not
as cool as other fathers, but he is close enough. He is nice and he wants
my family to be happy!" Girl, 17, California |

Dads and Daughters is the national nonprofit organization
for fathers and daughters. DADs provides tools to strengthen father-daughter
relationships and to transform the pervasive messages that value girls
more for how they look than who they are. DADs' vision is of a non-sexist
society where fathers are fully engaged in raising children; healthy,
strong father-daughter relationships are supported; men advocate on issues
affecting women and children; and media presents positive images of women
and girls.
