Chapter 1: Mission of a Wizard

She is in their classroom, studying their new magic lesson. All of her classmates are listening to their Professor except her. Deep in thought, she's staring at her book lying on her desk, not paying attention to the words.

"Wizard. I am a wizard. Everyday, I study about magic charms, magic words, magic potions, everything that is related to being a wizard. I'm Odette Cruz, currently in Mana Moon-it's like 4th Year in human world. Unknown seconds, minutes, hours, days, months, or years, and maybe I'll be chosen to be one of the wizards who'll KILL vampires."

Every one of her classmates is still in their lesson while she is absent-minded.

"We as wizards are trained not just to protect ourselves, but also to kill vampires. Wizards are second of the vampires' enemies-second to the werewolves. There's a story behind it...but I'm still figuring it out."

A secretary of their school's president went to the Mana Moon's classroom. She walked into the hallway and when she arrived knocked on the door. She opened it and spoke.

"Excuse me, Mr. Thompson...," she told the Professor with a smile. She sighed and continued. "Mr. Riva wishes to speak with Ms. Cruz." Everyone looked at Odette, including her Professor. The secretary said, "Thank you, sir. You may continue your discussion," closed the door, and leaved. Odette was surprised to hear her name by the secretary.

As she was still not standing up from her chair, the Professor of her spoke. "Ms. Cruz, in case you did not hear or simply did not pay attention, Mr. Riva wants to see you."

Odette looked at him, and then stood up from her chair. She walked out of her classroom, feeling her classmates' eyes on her. At that time, her hands become cold because of her nervousness. "OK...Mr. Riva will just talk to me about my performance here in school. Nothing else!" she thought as she was about to open the door.

She closed the door of their classroom and she breathed...very deeply. She walked into the hallway, leaving her classroom. Different thoughts came into her mind, but she remained positive and thought nothing will happen...-about that mission.

At last, she reached Mr. Riva's office. And when she reached it, she looked at the sign on the door, which read: "Mr. Riva's Office." She exhaled and told herself, "It will not be the mission. It will not. Please, I can't do that. I can't." Once she calmed herself, she knocked on the door and half-opened it. "M-M-Mr. Riva?" she said, still outside the office.

Mr. Riva, who was busy arranging about school papers, and work still managed to hear Odette's voice. "Ooh! Ms. Cruz! Come in, come in!" he respectfully told her while handling lots of papers and putting it in his drawer. Odette closed the door and waited for Mr. Riva to continue. "Sit down, Ms. Cruz," he said.

She obeyed and sat herself in the nearest chair. "W-W-Why did you called me, Mr. Riva?" Odette asked Mr. Riva.

He breathed deeply, and replied, "You're a great wizard, Ms. Odette Cruz. You're always on the honor rolls, and every student in the school adores you."

Odette seemed very much confused to what he said. She then quickly asked "W-W-What did you mean Mr. Riva? What is the connection of the things you've said to me, to my presence here in your office?"

"Let's get straight to the point Ms. Cruz." he paused then continued, "You are the wizard I've chosen for to kill a vampire."

Odette was shocked to the point that she couldn't even say a word. Her mind was very much puzzled; different thoughts poured in. She quickly responded to what Mr. Riva had told her. "What? I can't do that. I can't! With all do respect, sir, I will not do that. I mean, I'm still studying...and I can't kill a vampire!" She tried to find something else to say, but when nothing came to mind, she squeaked, "I just can't."

He then replied to her with an enthusiastic high voice, "You must! You must do it, Ms. Cruz! Do you want to put Wizardwood Academy in shame because of you?!"

Odette looked at him, still in shocked. She looked at her surroundings: Mr. Riva's desk, the school papers, the clock that is hanging on the wall, everything. All while tears were about to appear and drop from her eyes.

For a second, the room was filled with silence. Until Odette started to complain again. "Mr. Riva...Please. Not me..." she told him.

Mr. Riva's face hardened and said, "I'm sorry, Ms. Cruz, but I have already made my decision. You are going to fly to the mortal world, find a vampire, and kill it."

Odette sighed in teary -eyes after he said it. She don't know what to do thinking that she was given a mission that might claim her life-killing a vampire that is known to be very fast and having powers, just like them (except for being fast).

Mr. Riva, seeing Odette staring blankly at her feet, said in a low tone, "Ms. Cruz... You may now leave my office." He smiled assuringly.

Odette stood up and spoke up, eager to leave. "Thank you Mr. Riva." She quickly fled from the office. Other wizards walked past her in the hallway, not noticing her tear-stained face, holding their magic books. "Those wizards are very lucky not to be chosen to kill a vampire," she thought, suddenly jealous of them. "Then again, I'm the chosen wizard. I shouldn't complain. I mean, Mr. Riva's the Head of Professors and Wizards. He knows what's best, right?" She sighed and continued walking.

When she reached her classroom, she opened the door, went in and closed it. At that time, it was exactly the end of third period. Some classmates stared at Odette while others were busy chitchatting with other classmates. She seated herself in her chair, her mind still on the mission.

"Hey!" Kathleen, her close friend and classmate that is seated beside her, exclaimed.

Odette turned to Kathleen and replied, "Huh?"

"You OK?" Kathleen asked her.

"Umm...I'm...very, very OK," she replied with a problematic tone.

Kathleen's right eyebrow rose up and said, "Tsk, tsk, tsk. You're not OK Odette. I know it. Why, what did Mr. Riva told you?"

Odette nodded and quickly answered, "Nothing. It's nothing."

"Nothing?! It's not nothing! Odette, I'm your friend and I can keep secrets. I will not blab it to anyone! Promise!" Kathleen told her, while winking and raising her right hand's pinky.

Odette just smiled to what Kathleen did. However, she was still hesitant. "Kathleen?"

"Yes?" Kathleen replied, then seriously looked at Odette.

"What would you do if...You were chosen to... Kill a vampire?" Odette sadly asked her.

Kathleen was shocked when she heard that question and quickly responded, "You were chosen by Mr. Riva for that mission?"

Odette sighed and said, "Yeah...I was chosen for that."

"Oh my goodness!" said shocked Kathleen.

"Please...don't tell it to anyone, Kathleen. Only the two of us will know it, OK?" Odette begged Kathleen.

"OK...But how about Nathan? You'll not tell him? He's our friend too," Kathleen asked Odette.

Odette breathed deeply and shook her head. "No, don't. He'll just be more shocked than you."

Kathleen gave Odette a supportive smile and said, "Of course."
