Believe it or not, you now know enough HTML to make your very own web page! So let's learn how to save our web pages in a place where our friends' computers can access them. First, instead of typing the code into the Playground, you need to use a text editing program to create a new HTML document and save it on your computer. The program you use will be different depending on the type of computer you're using.

If you're using a Windows computer:

  1. Go to the Start menu
  2. Click on Run
  3. Type in the word "notepad" and click the OK button. The text editor Notepad should open up.
If you're on an Apple computer:
  1. Open the Finder
  2. Click on Applications
  3. Click to open TextEdit. The text editor TextEdit should open up.

After you've started the program, copy and paste the HTML from the Your Code section of the HTML Playground into your new document.

Next, we're going to save this document as an HTML file. There are a few guidelines to remember when it comes to naming your HTML files:

  • Don't use any special characters like *, ^, ~, etc.
  • Don't use spaces. If you want to separate words, use the underscore character _
  • For letters, only use the lowercase
Pretty simple, right? So let's name our HTML file mypage.html. The ".html" on the end of the file name lets your computer know that it is a web page instead of just a plain text document like you would make for your school papers. The steps for saving a file will be different depending on the program you're using.

If you're using Notepad:

  1. Go to the File menu
  2. Click on the Save As option
  3. Make sure you choose to save the document in a folder that you can find again easily
  4. Type in the file name (remember the rules listed above!)
  5. Where it says Save as type, choose the option All files
  6. Click the Save button
If you're using TextEdit:
  1. Go to the File menu
  2. Click on the Save As option
  3. Make sure you choose to save the document in a folder that you can find again easily
  4. Type in the file name (remember the rules listed above!)
  5. Where it says Save as type, choose the option Rich Text File
  6. Click the Save button
